Chapter 7
Maccoy
==============================================================================
I've decided to take a different approach about my situation with Mo. Instead of my usual crying and whining, I'm going to just except it. If Mo wants to be with someone else, then fine. Be with someone else. I don't want any of the drama. Today, I'm eating ice cream and hanging with a new friend of mine. And if I were to leave suddenly, I would tell him where I'm going. Because he would want to know.
For the next 2 days, Bodie and I would have done a lot together. We started getting to know each other while eating ice cream. Emilia (Bodie's friend) gave us 10 percent discounts, just like Bodie said. I ordered 3 scoops of vanilla with chocolate sauce, while Bodie ordered 2 scoops of pineapple with strawberry sauce. I told him it looked gross, but after I tasted it, it immediately became my favorite ice cream
flavor.
After that, we caught a movie and I challenged him to race me back home. Bodie was much faster than me, so he won. But given the fact that he was a lifeguard, I'm not really surprised he won. I still had a really fun time. I kept forgetting I was still a little sick, but that didn't stop me from having a blast. I fell asleep early that night, so I didn't get a chance to confront Mo. He left before I had woken up. I tried calling him, but he didn't answer. So I called Bodie instead. He said his friend Taye had extra tickets to a basketball game, and asked if I wanted to go. Of course I said yes, and in the next hour we were at a basketball game. Bodie was really into sports, he loved them so much. I loved how he really got into it, even if he wasn't the one on the court. The game was so good that when we got home, we played some basketball ourselves.
Bodie was breathing hard from playing 3 long games of basketball with me.
"Hey, MaCcoy?"
"Yeah?" I turned around and shot the ball.
"You know what would make this more fun?"
"What?" I missed, and the ball rebounded to Bodie.
"If we had more players, so we could play teams." Bodie dribbled the ball quickly around me.
"Yeah, yur right..." Bodie then dunked the ball hard into the hoop. I was impressed. I sucked at this sport, but it was still fun playing it.
"I'll be right back." Bodie said. He was gone for a little over 10 minutes and came back with 2 more people. A kid I've seen Mo hang with a lot, and Emilia. The kid looked up at me, which made me feel much taller since I was shorter than most people I knew.
"I'm not scared of this guy, you're goin' down!" The kid said.
"Alright," Bodie said. "Let's pick teams ok? I don't mind being with Glitch." Apparently the kid's nickname was Glitch. I asked him what his real name was, but he refused to answer. I had really wanted to be on Bodie's team since he was so good, but he chose to go with Glitch and I was stuck with Emilia. She was pretty good though, compared to me at least. I didn't get a single shot in the entire game, and I looked crazy running around on the court. Glitch was surprisingly great at it. He couldn't shoot because of his height, but his defense was amazing. He swooped the ball right of Emilia's hands and dribbled it to the basket. Then he passed the ball to Bodie. Bodie (of course) dunked the ball right into the basket and did a little victory dance.
"Woo! Yes! We won little dude!"
Glitch frowned. "I am NOT little."
"Huh, really? You're like eleven, right?" Glitch said nothing. Emilia interrupted.
"We want a rematch!"
"Fine," Bodie twirled the ball on his finger. "Let's play a game of 'P-n-e-u-m-o-n-i-a'."
"You're on!" Emilia seemed determined.
"I say we make a bet! Yeah, bet bet bet!" Glitch suggested.
"Glitch," Bodie said. "...bets just make things worse... besides, we kicked their butts in the last game. No way they would win." The boys gave each other a good fist bump while me and Emilia stood there insulted.
"Alright, you want a bet? Fine. Bring it on girlies!" Emilia said.
"Great, then it's settled." Bodie thought for a second. "Ok, if we win, then you guys have to-"
"Streak!" Glitch suggested.
"No Glitch, something else...ok, you guys have to eat an entire jar of chili peppers. The only thing you can drink is hot sauce."
Emilia's eyes widened at the thought. But her thirst for competition took over, and she nervously agreed.
"Fine...and if we win, then Glitch has to wear a maid dress while pulling a naked Bodie in a wagon all through the park."
"We can't do that!" Bodie exclaimed.
"Yeah, we can't do that!" Glitch agreed.
"I'm sorry...do I hear a chicken? Buck buck..." Emilia teased.
"Real mature Emi." Bodie crossed his arms.
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you. All I hear are a bunch of scared ass chickens. Buck buck buck..."
"Emi, Glitch is acting more mature than you right now, and he's only 10." Glitch opened his mouth to say something, but decided to be quiet and frown a little.
"Ok ok, guys. Relax..." That was my attempt at calming them down. Which if course didn't work.
"Well? Are you going through with it or what?" Emilia asked. Bodie smirked.
"Yeah, yeah we'll do it." They shook hands and the bet was official.
"Jeez, Emi. You're acting more snooty than Aubrey..."
"Please, she's been acting extra snooty lately. We haven't even talked because she's been busy with that guy."
"What guy?" I asked.. "Uh...I think his name was Mo or something...not sure but that sounds about right. She's been having him over at her house for a couple days now. She's apparently 'busy'." My heart sank upon hearing those words. Mo had been seeing another girl! How many woman has he been seeing?
"Emilia!" I screamed
"Yeah? What's wrong?"
"W-where does Aubrey live...?" My words trembled. I focused on speaking, but my anger took over me.
"She lives right by that mini mall, about 7 miles from here. Why? You got some beef with her?"
"N-no... I have to go."
"Hey, wait don't go! We haven't started the game yet!"
I walked away despite her pleas. Because there was more important business to take care of.
Anger was boiling up, and when that happened I was unpredictable. I ran to my house, opened my garage, and got on my bike. Emilia ran after me.
"Dude! Where are you going?! You can't just leave!" I wasn't listening. I was too fixated on getting to Mo. Emilia grabbed my arm, and stood there looking confused.
"Please tell me where you're going... I don't get it. Did I say something wrong?" I found myself looking down at the ground, my eyes were quivering. Desperate for tears.
"I... Just...can't take it..."
"Can't take what?" She sounded so concerned.
"Mo...he's confusing me..."
"In what way?"
"He keeps leaving... And I think he's cheating on me..." Emilia winced, as it was obvious it had all clicked. "Oh...wow...I guess that would explain what Aubrey's been doing...so, you guys are...a thing?" Now I know she's been hanging with Aubrey. I slowly nodded my head, as Emilia sighed. She got down on her knees, and patted my shoulder pretty hard. I know she meant it in a nice way, but it kinda hurt..."look, I know you're probably hurt. But getting angry, confronting, and fighting isn't going to help." I wiped my tears to show that I was listening. "Sometimes..." She continued. "You just have to solve these things in a calm matter. Even if you're about to burst." I took an extremely deep breath, held it, then let go. "Ok." I replied. She smiled, then looked away. "I know I was no better in basketball. Screaming and making bets just cause I was angry about us getting our asses handed to us. Shouldn't have done that. But hey, looks like we both learned something today huh?" "Hmp...yeah." We just sat there for a minute. Bodie must have thought we'd chickened out or something, because he never came to check on us. "Tell you what," Emilia said. "I have to drop Glitch off at his Aunt's, and Aubrey doesn't live to far from him..." My face lightened up a little from excitement. "So...I could take to you to Aubrey's if you really want to confront Mo..." "Yes! Thank you!" I hugged her, and she hugged me back. "Alright already, enough of that." She said. We stopped hugging. "Only on one condition ok?" "What?" "You will not yell at him in any way. Confront him CALMLY." The tone of her voice made it very clear she was serious. I agreed to the conditions, and we got up to explain the whole thing to Bodie and Glitch.
Bodie decided to come along for support. But I think he only came because he had nothing better to do. As we were getting in the car my excitement soon turned to sadness, and my sadness turned into frustration. Because the reality of the situation had hit me. At this point it was pretty obvious what Mo was doing, and I didn't like it one bit. Soon, my happy attitude turned into a quiet emotional state. And I stopped talking. Our lively conversations turned into awkward silence, as I had stopped replying. In only four minutes, our happy joy ride had turned into a quiet car ride. With the occasional cough from me, as I was still a little sick.
Chapter 8
Mo
================================================================================
I've done and gone through a lot of things in my life, but never have I ever worked so hard in 5 hours. Here I am lying on a bed, breathing rapidly and I swear I'm gonna faint. Although I'm tired, it's worth it if I'm pleasing Miss Aubrey. "Mo, there you are." Speak of the devil. "I need you to do some more things for me. I hope you're not tired." I sighed heavily. "Naw, I'm good. I'm up for some more." "Great. Come down stairs for a snack, then get back to work. "Aight." Miss Aubrey walked out of the room and shut the door, even though she knew I was coming out. I wasted no time getting up. I was starving, snack time to me was like a feast.
I sat down at the table with Angel and a few of Aubrey's other friends. Aubrey had one male friend (Angel) and the rest were all a bunch of giggly hyper girls. While the girls were laughing about who knows what, Aubrey came in and served us some food. "Soups on girls! And Angel." We ended up eating tiny sandwiches which I'm pretty sure is something only rich people and dieting girls eat. Since the room is filled with girls and Aubrey's rich, I'd say I'm going to be eating this a lot. I had to have eaten like 30 of those things! They were just so small, I couldn't get full. Since the girls were all talking, I tried to make small talk with Angel considering that he was sitting right by me.
"Hey, why's Aubrey so mean to me?"
"Bonita is mean to everyone mijo. Just the way she is."
"What about to you?"
"I like to call it...tough amor..."
"Yeah, but she's kind of catty...also, what does Bonita mean?"
"Pretty. In Espanol. It's one of the many names I call her. When it's just me and my compadres, we call her El Perra."
"That's a pretty name. It suits her."
"You have no idea."
Chapter 9
Maccoy
The entire ride to Aubrey's was quiet. Nobody spoke a single word to me. In between stops, I thought I heard whispering of some sort. But that stopped as soon as I glanced at everyone. They would just turned their little heads like nothing was said. And I would shrug it off. I know I was mad and all, but that didn't mean I didn't want to talk. Sometimes talking helped. So this peace just made me angrier. Bodie tapped he's fingers on car window, and was dazed for a moment. He broke out of his daze, and looked at me as if to say something. Then he looked away and continued his tapping. He did this every two minutes until I finally said something.
"What are you staring at me for?"
"Oh, uh...no reason. Are you ok?"
"I'm fine. I'm just tired of playing cat and mouse. I wish Mo would just tell me the truth already."
I tried to talk calmly, but it came out kinda bitchy. I had no reason to be mad at Bodie. If anything, I should be happy with him. He's been more of boyfriend to me than Mo has in the past couple days. Maybe I should date him? Nah...judging by the way he acts, I don't think he's...well you know.
Bodie turned his head back to the window to continue his repetitive tapping. As I was about to say something about it, we came to a sudden halt. Emilia took her hands off the wheel and gestured to Glitch to get out the car. She hadn't noticed Glitch was sleeping because his head was turned the opposite way. She tapped on his forehead several times. "Glitch, come on get up. Time to go home." Glitch woke up almost immediately. He looked around and got out the car. Emilia waved goodbye. "See ya, dude." "See ya." Bodie rolled down his window. "Bye kiddo." Glitch nodded. I said nothing, and slumped deeper into my chair. Now, we go to Aubrey's. This is it, I'm going to catch Mo in the act. My face may say I'm sad, but my mind says a different story. Secretly, I can't wait to catch him and break up with him. Then he'll know what it feels like.
By the time we got to Aubrey's, it was dark, and the atmosphere was starting to creep me out. Hot days suddenly turned into frosty nights around this time. "I wish I had brought my jacket..." I thought. All I could do cradle myself to try to get warm.
"So..." Emilia said as she turned the heat on. "Are you going in or what?" My heart was beating fast. And for some reason, I was scared. But I didn't come all the way out here for nothing. I pushed my fear to the side and got out the car. "Wait here for ten minutes. If I don't come back in twenty, I've killed Mo." Emilia laughed really hard with that one. Bodie soon followed, as Emilia's laugh was quite contagious. "There ya go." She said. "Go in there with a humorous attitude about it. Be positive. Sobbing won't help." I gave her the thumbs up, and started to feel my anxiety go down a notch. I was so deep into the thought of being positive, I had forgotten how cold it was. "Jeez...it feels like a freakin blizzard out here..." I started running to the front door in an effort to get inside quickly. I rang the doorbell rapidly until someone answered. I was hoping it would be Aubrey or one of her many female friends. But it couldn't be, because a man answered it instead.
"Hola, can I help you?" He asked.
"Huh, oh yeah. Um...could I speak to Aubrey...?"
"You sure about that? She's kinda abrasive man."
"I'm pretty sure. I just want to talk to her for a minute..." The man looked suspicious, but called for her anyway.
"Bonita, there's someone here who wants to talk to you!" I waited patiently, until a redheaded woman appeared at the door. She pushed the man roughly out the way.
"What do you want?" She said.
"I uh...I want to come in and talk...it's important." I tried to get to the point so that I could get inside the house. I couldn't feel my ears. Suddenly, the man had pushed his way through the door.
"Hey chika, is this your boyfriend?"
"No Angel, why do you keep asking me that every time I answer the damn door? Go do something with yourself. Go ahead, run along."
"Ok ok, just making sure...jeez." He walked away. I had to ask.
"Brother?"
"NO."
"Boyfriend?"
"Never. He's just an annoyance who is always in my house. Now what do you want?"
"I need to talk to Mo. Is he here?"
"Why do you want to speak with him? He's busy."
"So he IS in there!" I yelled fairly loud. The woman looked like she was going to slam the door right in my face.
"LOOK..." I said trying to find repose. "I need to speak with Mo RIGHT NOW. It's freezing out here and I just want to go inside real quick to tell him something that I think should be said to his face." Aubrey arched her eyebrows and folded her arms. She leaned on the doorframe as she looked at me from top to bottom. "Fine. Since you asked so nicely, I'll let you in." She walked in and signaled a come hither motion. I followed, relieved I was going to warm up.
She led me to a large living room. Where we sat down on a beautiful brown couch. I was still cold, but I tried not to show it or complain. I didn't want to be rude. "I'll go get him. Just...sit there." I sat there like she said, eager to give Mo a peace of my mind. I attempted to relax a little, but my body just wanted to jump up and scream at him. Calmly, of course. After I heard Aubrey say, "There's someone that's here to see you." I heard footsteps down the hall. And sure enough, Aubrey, came back with Mo.
"Here. Have a nice talk." Aubrey sat Mo down on the couch and left. "You have 5 minutes." Aubrey said before leaving the room. "Angel, time them." "Si." Angel went to the far end of the room and checked his watch. "Go ahead. Just pretend I'm not here." I nodded, not really caring who hears as long as Mo heard me. My body tensed up, ready for words to fly right out my mouth and knock some common sense into Mo. But the room was all too peaceful. I found that now that Mo was here, I suddenly didn't know what to say. My voice was locked, held back by the possibility of more pain. I couldn't scream at him, I can't yell, and raising my voice won't help. I promised I'd go through this calmly. But now I'm so calm, that I haven't said a word. Silence... More silence... Even more silence... I was surprised that Mo was the first to say something.
"So uh...what are you doing here?" I winced.
"What am I doing here? You want to know why I'm here?"
My voice gradually got louder. (Relax Maccoy, don't lose control)... Mo scratched the back of his neck and looked down.
"Are you here to pick me up? I am getting tired if riding on my skateboard everywhere..."
"No...I'm here because I've been trying to figure out why you keep leaving, and where you're going." (Good job Maccoy. You haven't burst yet. This might actually be a calm conversation)!
"What do you mean Mac? I've been here."
"Ok, I know that now...but WHY?" I talked in a mono tone to help me keep my poker face.
"You know...just hanging..." I gritted my teeth.
"So I take it you and Dare were 'just hanging' also?"
"Um...uh...yes. We talked a lot too."
"......"
"Mac...?"
"WHAT?"
"Why are you here?" I lost it.
"I'm here because you haven't been making any sense all week! You keep leaving for no reason, you leave me sick at home with a stranger who I thought was robbing me, and now I find out you're over at different woman's houses! Like, uh, Dare! Aubrey too! Why are you doing this to me?! If you don't love me, fine! I can take heartbreak! But what I can't take are phony boyfriends who are barley home and can't come up with a decent excuse for it! So, explain, or move out and go be with Aubrey, or Dare, or whoever the hell you wanna be with!" Mo was speechless. And for 3 minutes, no one spoke. After I caught my breath, I said something.
"WELL?"
"Don't know what to say."
"Say something."
No other words came out of Mo's mouth that night. Once I was done saying my peace, Mo went quiet. He looked like he was going to run away. As the quiet minutes of us sitting on opposite sides from each other passed. I realized a couple things. One, I regret saying what I said. Granted all of it is true, but screaming wasn't gonna help. Another thing that I had just now noticed, was the way Mo looked sitting on that couch. His clothes were dirty, and wrinkled. And he looked tired. I could tell by the way he squinted his eyes when he was exhausted. What could he have been doing? I would have loved to ask, except before I could...Mo walked away. Yep. He just...Walked away. And he never turned back. Not even to see my expression. Which was heartbroken. I felt my chest tighten up as I tried to wipe my tears off my face. After fighting it for minute, I gave up and just bawled. I don't cry too lightly, when I cry, I CRY. It's not a pretty sight. I cry out of my eyes and nose, not mention I'm loud. But you know...This entire time I forgot Angel was standing several feet away from me. He just stood there like nothing happened. I gathered myself so that I could speak. I was still sniffling like a baby, so I spoke quietly. It was just easier.
"Angel...that's your name right...?"
"Si."
"I'd like to go now..."
"Alright, then follow me."
I slowly walked down the porch steps and headed towards the car. Bodie and Emilia were blasting rock music so I don't think they heard me. I entered the car, sat down, put my seatbelt on and slumped back into my chair. They turned the rock off and looked at me confused. Their faces read "What happened?!" But they said nothing. We got moving after a while. Back to my house. I had mixed feelings about tonight's ordeal. And once again, an exiting moment turned into silent anger.
Chapter 10
Mo
========================================================================================
There wasn't much to say about last night. I can't even think of a word to describe it...Awkward? Sad? Confusing? Questions were asked, but none were answered. Well, none were answered truthfully. I had butterflies in my stomach all night. I normally sleep at Maccoy's or visversa, but this time I was alone, accompanied by the guilt of lying to Maccoy. I never thought I'd say this, but all this lying is going to be worth it. When you may ask? Tomorrow. I've got something planned for Maccoy. I just hope he's not permanently mad at me.
It was eleven thirty-four AM. I was still in bed, and my jeans I had wore from last night were on. I must have been in a rush to go to bed. I took my cellphone off my nightstand, and turned it on. I had 3 missed calls from Maccoy a couple hours ago. I thought it was sweet that he called even when he was mad at me. I didn't want to risk calling, so I texted him and was shocked get a reply.
"Hello...?"
"Hey."
"We need 2 talk."
"Yeah...we do."
"I wanna talk to yur face thoe."
"You had that chance last night."
"I noe...and I'm sry. I wnt 2 tell u the truth. But I PROMISE it's not wat u thnk it is!"
".................." *sniffle*
"Mac? R U crying?"
".............No.....I heard you. Ok. Where do you want to go?"
"Don't noe...some place quiet I guess...lik..."
"Like what?"
"Sunflower Fields Park sounds kewl."
"Yeah it does...Let's try that. It's always nice there."
"Yeah...2morrow at 7:30."
"That's when it get's dark..."
"U dnt lik sunsets??"
"They're pretty."
"Thn its settled

"
"......ok....see you there.

"
We ended our texing, and I got up to take a well deserved shower. I had to hurry up, because Miss Aubrey would be coming at around noon to drop something off for me. I ran into the shower and took a quick one. As I was in there, I felt so happy that I would be meeting Maccoy tomorrow. The texting session worked just as planned. As long as he's meeting me in Sunflower Fields, it will be perfect. We talk things out, Maccoy get's all the answers to his questions, and we love each other again. And I guaranty Maccoy won't leave empty handed.
I can promise him that.

Chapter 11
Maccoy
Emilia has been really nice to me lately. She's been so understanding, and a really good friend. She keeps me optimistic, while Bodie keeps me full. If he takes me out for ice cream and burgers one more time, I might burst. But overall, they are a really nice group to hang with. Glitch says nice things to me too sometimes. But most of the time we tease each other. It's all in good fun though. I like to think of him as my little brother.
So, because Emilia is so nice, she offered to drive me to Sunflower Fields Park today so I can meet up with Mo. It's a short drive, but her kindness goes a long way.
"You gonna be ok?" Emilia asked as she sipped her Gatorade.
"Yeah, I'll be ok. I don't plan on screaming my head off today." Yes. I told Emilia about what happened at Aubrey's. Bodie heard about it too. I needed someone to rant to. She was there to listen. So I told her.
"Alright. If you think you'll be ok. But don't take too long...it's getting dark..."
"Got it." I got out the car and ran to the fields. I knew exactly where Mo was, because Mo and I come here often. I ran straight to 'our spot' and saw Mo standing there. "HEEY!" I flailed my hands around because the sunflowers were so freaking huge.
"Hey! Right here!" I ran to greet him. I didn't want to make things awkward, so I greeted him politely.
"Hey. So uh..."
"Here, sit down." Mo pointed to a picnic cloth on the ground.
"Oh...thanks." I sat down with him. Mo didn't miss a beat after we sat down. He started talking about the real truth of why he's been leaving. It's like he planned this whole fiasco or something.
"Ok...well first, I'm sorry for lying to you. But if it makes you feel any better, there's a reason why I did." I nodded.
"The reason is that I've been taking jobs from and money from people. I asked Dare to lend me some money. She said she didn't mind, but she wanted to give it to me in person because she didn't trust mailing it to me. So I saw her in person. That's why I went out that when you were really sick."
"That doesn't explain the other couple days." I crossed my arms.
"I can explain that too. Dare's money wasn't the exact amount I needed. And my job wasn't gonna cut it. It would take too long to save up as much money as I needed. Miss Aubrey said that if I worked as a handy man around her for a couple days she would pay the exact amount of money I needed. So I did that."
"What did you need the money for?"
"So I can buy something I've been trying to afford for little while now. But let's hold off on the money thing for a second. This is everything that has happened. I promise I wasn't cheating on you. I would never EVER do something like that. I know I left your bedside, but that doesn't mean I left you...I love you..." My heart stopped at those words. I always knew Mo loved me...but It's just that I've never seen him so passionate about it. It was like he was a different person.
"Mo..."
"Shh..." He pointed to the sunset. We stood up, and watched, as the sunset painted the sky a pale orange.
There was just something about watching a sunset with someone who just said they loved you. It was an amazing feeling...So amazing, that I was day dreaming. I guess I didn't hear the rustling of the flowers as Mo got down on one knee. I turned around to find that I was facing a shiny gold ring in my face. Mo was proposing to me.
"......" I was at a lost for words. My face did all the talking for me. Wide eyes, mouth wide open, but covered by my palms. I was shocked.
None of us said anything. We had a full conversation just by looking at each other. Mo didn't stay silent for too long. He broke the silent my softly speaking.
"All week, I've been saving up enough money for this ring."
I let that sink in for a moment. Everything that has happened, all of the pain, and days of him not being here, all summed up to this? Everyday he was gone I thought he didn't care about me, but everything was for me the entire time...
I tried to speak, but it came out shaky. So I just nodded while crying.
"I know it was expensive..." He continued. "But I don't care. Maccoy...You're worth everything."
I just about flat out bawled at that moment.
"Maccoy..."
"Y-yes?"
"Will you Marry me...?"
"YES!"
Mo smiled, and hugged me right away. I kissed him like I haven't seen him in a couple days. And you know what? It felt better than a normal kiss with him. Because knowing that he truly loved me, changed the way I feel about him almost entirely.
That night, I didn't care what had happened a night ago. I just wanted to be with Mo. It's all I've wanted for a long time. To hear him say that I'm worth everything, makes me feel like the luckiest guy in the world.
I love you so much Mo...When I'm with you...it's endless limerence...
